Weird Things Happy Cats Do and Why

Our feline friends let us know how happy they are with a nudge of their head, but some of their behaviors are a little baffling. Ever wonder about the reasoning our cats do some of the weird things they do?

These behaviors may seem confusing, but they’re quite positive (as positive as dead rodents can be). Here’s why our cats do some of the strange things they do and how we should react.

Gross Gift Giving

As a cat parent, you’ve probably woken up to find a toy mouse, or, if you’re not as lucky, a dead mouse at the foot of your bed. Rather than punish your kitty, give them some love. They’re simply showing their affection for you.

Even well-fed indoor kitties feel the urge to hunt and will drop the spoils of their victory at your feet, such as plush toys or a fake mouse, and your fearless hunter should still be praised for his exceptional skills.

Simply dispose of any unsavory gifts quickly and without fanfare. Better yet, keep your furry friend indoors, and you’re sure to get toy mice at your feet instead.

Always Curious

Your cat always seems to be in your business, never wanting to miss a minute of what you’re up to. From the food you are cooking to the pile of papers on the desk, that curiosity is their way of seeking answers to why these things exist.

Cats also possess object permanence, or the ability to remember that an object exists even if they can’t see it anymore. So, if you try to hide something your cat has been playing with, chances are you’ll find them looking for ways to get it back or even just staring intently at the drawer, box or container you hid it in.

Trying to Be a Trip Hazard

It’s mealtime, and your cat seems intent on tripping you before you can reach for that can of 9Lives® Meaty Paté Super Supper® cat food. Your kitty isn’t trying to harm you. They’re trying to mark you with their scent by rubbing against your legs. We recommend putting safety first and waiting to feed your cat until they stop marking you.

By understanding a little bit more about why cats display these types of behaviors, we hope you feel even closer to your furry sidekick. Keep learning how to understand your cat, like how to make parties cat-friendly
