Are you considering adopting a new furry family member this holiday season? Local animal shelters are a great place to look – dogs and cats are anxiously awaiting their furever home and are ready to be loved. However, bringing home a new pet during the holiday season can be a joyful yet sometimes challenging experience.

These four tips will help ensure a smooth transition for both you and your new furry family member:

1. Create a welcoming environment by pet-proofing your home.

  • Keep toxic foods out of reach: There are a handful of holiday goodies that are toxic to dogs and cats, including macadamia nuts, chocolate, raisins and more. Make sure to keep these ingredients away from your new furry family member to keep them safe!
  • Remove hazards: Before welcoming them home, take the time to put away any toxic plants – especially those often used for holiday décor like poinsettias, small objects that could be easily swallowed, and chemicals. We also recommend securing any electrical cords, including Christmas lights, and ensure that windows, doors and other potential escape paths are secure.
  • Establish safe spaces: Coming into a new home can be a stressful experience for a pet. You could consider designating a quiet area with a bed, blankets, and toys where your pet can retreat to feel safe and comfortable.

2. Gather the appropriate supplies.

  • Stock up on the essentials: Before bringing your pet home, pick up items like a collar, leash, and ID tags. Don’t forget toys and a comfortable bed! Having everything ready will help with the transition and getting your new pet settled in your home.
  • Keep them fed and hydrated. Pick up an appropriately sized water bowl for your pet. It’s also important to select the right pet food for your new family member. Find out from the shelter what they’re used to eating as you will need to slowly transition your pet to their new food. When in doubt, always consult a veterinarian.

3. Pack plenty of patience.

  • Keep it low-key: The first few days should be calm and quiet. Avoid overwhelming your new pet with visitors or loud celebrations during this time of adjustment. Allow them time to become accustomed to their new environment and routine without layering in additional stress.
  • Introduce gradually: If you have other pets, introduce them gradually. Keep them separated at first and allow them to get used to each other’s scents before bringing them face-to-face. Drawing out this process can help reduce anxiety and any potential conflicts. Be sure that these interactions are supervised.
  • Be patient and observant: Every pet adjusts at their own pace. Remain watchful for signs of stress or anxiety and when needed, give them their space. Don’t force it; start by spending time sitting quietly with them and allow them to approach you when they’re comfortable.

4. Allow them to adjust and establish a routine:

  • Limit access initially: When your pet first arrives, limit their access to one or two rooms away from any decorations. This way they can safely acclimate to their new environment without feeling overwhelmed. Gradually allow them to explore more areas as they become comfortable.
  • Pets thrive on routine: Establishing a routine during one of the busiest times of year can be challenging. From the start, work on setting consistent times for feeding, walks, and playtime. This helps your new pet understand what to expect and can help ease their anxiety during the adjustment period.
