How to Road Trip with Big Dogs

Traveling with a big dog can be equal parts exciting and daunting, but if you follow these five tips, you and your furry friend can conquer the road.

1. Check the Weather

When first planning a trip, be aware of what time of year it is and the type of weather that typically accompanies it. We encourage you to avoid extreme heat. Many breeds are at risk for overheating. Always be aware of both indoor and outdoor temperatures to make sure they are comfortable.

2. Bring a Ramp

To save your backs and the joints of your large dogs, consider investing in a ramp to help them get in and out of vehicles.

3. Exercise!

To help dogs travel easily, take them on a walk and let them burn some energy before and after heading out. This way, they’re more likely to sleep while traveling.

4. Pack a doggy bag

Always have the essentials on hand, including poop bags, water, a brush, a drool rag, toys, a first aid kit and your go-to Post Consumer Brands pet food, including Nutrish® dog food.

5. Call ahead

Even if a place says it’s pet-friendly, be sure to call ahead and confirm your large dogs are okay. Some places have weight, breed or capacity restrictions and you don’t want to end up not having a place to stay!
